Interdisciplinary Care in Pregnancy

Different Professions Can Support A Healthy Journey

Pregnancy is a unique and transformative time, often accompanied by physical changes, emotional shifts, and new health needs. An interdisciplinary approach—where multiple
health professionals collaborate—can provide safe, holistic care to support both parent(s) and baby. Here are some ways that naturopathic medicine, prenatal massage, and
acupuncture can play a role in pregnancy care.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors can guide patients through many health concerns in pregnancy with safe, evidence-informed  approaches.  This can include management of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, fatigue, digestive issues, sleep and anxiety, and iron deficiency.  They may use herbs, nutrient supplementation, acupuncture or acupressure, and individualized dietary adjustments.

Naturopathic medicine can also provide tailored nutritional, herbal and supplement support to ensure optimal intake of key nutrients like folate, iron, and omega-3s, all of which play a role in maternal and fetal health.

Prenatal Massage Therapy

Prenatal massage offers more than just relaxation—it can help relieve lower back and hip pain, reduce swelling in the legs and ankles, and improve circulation. Studies also show massage therapy can lower stress hormones and promote better sleep, which are invaluable during pregnancy. Certified prenatal massage therapists are trained in positioning and techniques that are safe for both parent and baby, making it a supportive therapy for comfort and wellbeing.

Chiropractic Care & The Webster Technique

Chiropractic adjustments can help address the postural changes, back pain, rib or pelvic discomfort that often arise during pregnancy. The Webster technique is a specialized assessment of the pelvis, including the SI joints and pubic symphysis.  Chiropractic care is drug-free, safe when performed by trained practitioners, and can be an excellent tool for musculoskeletal support during pregnancy.

Acupuncture for Pregnancy Support

Acupuncture has been increasingly studied for its role in managing pregnancy-related concerns. Evidence suggests it may help alleviate nausea and vomiting, reduce pelvic and low back pain, and support emotional balance during pregnancy. In the later stages, acupuncture may be used as part of labor preparation to encourage cervical ripening and help reduce the need for medical induction. When performed by a licensed provider, acupuncture is generally considered safe and well tolerated throughout pregnancy.

A Team-Based Approach

Each profession offers unique benefits, but when combined, the support becomes even more powerful. An interdisciplinary clinic allows pregnant patients to receive care that
addresses the whole person—body, mind, and lifestyle—while ensuring safety through coordinated communication among providers.
