Nanaimo Physiotherapy Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral to book a Physiotherapy appointment?

No, you don't need a doctor's referral to see a Physiotherapist in Nanaimo. However, some extended health insurance plans may still require a referral for reimbursement, so it's best to check with your provider beforehand.

Is direct billing available for Physiotherapy?

Yes, we offer direct billing for most major extended health insurance providers. Please bring your policy information with you to your first appointment, and we'll gladly process the claim for you right at 3 Cedars Wellness Centre.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your initial appointment is primarily an assessment. Your Physiotherapist will start by taking a detailed history of your condition, followed by a thorough physical examination. They will then explain your diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan, which often includes some hands-on treatment and initial exercises.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Please wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your therapist to easily access and assess the injured area. For example, shorts for a knee injury or a tank top for a shoulder issue.

Do you accept ICBC or WCB claims?

At this time, we do not accept ICBC or WCB claims for Physiotherapy services. All appointments are paid privately. We will provide you with a detailed receipt that you may be able to submit to a private insurance provider.

What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

It is a specialized area of physical therapy that addresses conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles, such as incontinence, pelvic pain, and organ prolapse. Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist has advanced training and uses internal and external techniques to assess and treat these specialized concerns in a confidential environment.

Do you offer IMS or Acupuncture?

Yes, our qualified Physiotherapists have completed additional training and may incorporate techniques like Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) or Acupuncture into your treatment plan when indicated. These modalities are effective for releasing muscle tension and managing pain.

If you are looking for these services outside of physiotheraphy, please view our services page for more information.

How long is a typical treatment session?

Initial assessment appointments are typically longer (45–60 minutes) to allow for a full diagnosis. Follow-up treatment sessions usually range from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of your issue and the treatment modalities used.
